Lady Dragons 4-1

 

On Saturday afternoon, November 24th, Cortland Women’s Basketball team day-tripped to Canton, New York for their first Saturday game of the season where they took home their fourth win of the season against St. Lawrence University 74-62.  Phoebe Byrnes scored a three-pointer within the first 21 seconds of the first period leading the Red Dragons 3-0, and by the end of the first period they were still holding a leading score of 38-22.

In attempt to catch up to CWB, St. Lawrence got closer six minutes and 11 seconds into the second period with a score of 41-46, Cortland.  Grace Williamson totaled 14 points as well as Phoebe Byrnes and Caysen Cohen with 14 points. Junior Lindsey Minor came through with eight points, two of which were three-pointers in the second half as well as three assists. Megan Touhey contributed eight points, six rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals, and junior Sarah Seger concluded eight points, four rebounds and two assists.

It was a great game for the Cortland Women’s Basketball team before their week off for the holiday.  The Lady Dragons are currently 4-1 to date for the season, that’s something to be thankful for!

Home Opener Winning Streak

 

The Cortland Women’s Basketball team has successfully grabbed two wins in a row during their home opener on Tuesday and Thursday at the Park Center gymnasium.

On Tuesday, November 19th at 6:00 p.m., the Red Dragons defeated Elmira College 68-41 during the exciting home opener.  Senior Grace Williamson led 16 points with six rebounds, senior Megan Touhey with 15 points, six rebounds as well as four assists, and sophomore Caysea Cohen with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists.  Additionally, junior Phoebe Byrnes contributed eight points and four assists and junior Erin Wolstenholme concluded six rebounds.  It was an exciting game for the lady dragons and enough to get them hyped for Thursday against SUNYIT for a non-league matchup.

Two nights later, on Thursday, November 21st, CWB as well as fans headed back to Park Center gymnasium at 6:00 p.m. for yet another exciting game during their home opener week.  At the end of the first period, Cortland took the lead 50-22 against SUNYIT, and the Red Dragons ended their night with a 89-46 win.  Phoebe Byrnes scored 17 points, junior Erin Wolstenholme scored 14 points, and Caysea Cohen with 14 points as well.  Cohen also made five rebounds and four assists. Senior Jeannette Harris concluded 10 points, Megan Touhey added nine points, and Grace Williamson had a game-high of 11 rebounds.

The Cortland Women’s Basketball team is officially 3-1.  Congratulations girls!!

Senior Spotlight: #13 Megan Touhey

Senior Spotlight:  #13 Megan Touhey

I could never blow the opportunity to shine a spotlight on the three graduating seniors of the Cortland Women’s Basketball team. At 5’10”, senior and captain Megan Touhey of Maine, New York is a guard for the CWB team. She graduated from Maine-Endwell High School in 2010 and plans to graduate in May of 2014.

1. What’s one fun fact about you? “If I didn’t play basketball, I’d be playing ice hockey.”

2. How old were you when you first started basketball, and why? “I first started dribbling a ball when I was 2 years old because I watched my older siblings play, so I always wanted to play with them.”

3. What will you miss the most as a post-graduate? “I will miss competing with my teammates the most.”

4. Do you have any basketball plans for the future? “My only plans for basketball in the future would be considering recreational basketball leagues.”

5. What’s your favorite memory from through out your entire basketball career? “My favorite memory throughout my whole career was coming back from a 30-point deficit against Medaille College and winning overtime sophomore year.”

A Shout Out

A big congratulations to senior and captain Grace Williamson, of Olean, New York, who earned a spot on the all-tournament team after scoring 17 points and pulling down 15 rebounds during Saturday’s game against Mary Washington for the University of Mary Washington’s Hampton Inn South Tipoff Tournament.  WAY TO GO!!

Opening Season Win

 

Not only were students at SUNY Cortland celebrating the annual Cortaca Jug win over Ithaca College this weekend, but celebrating the CWB team’s opening season 83-47 win over Virginia Wesleyan College as well.  The Red Dragons played their heart out Friday night upon arriving in Fredericksburg, Virginia for the University of Mary Washington’s Hampton Inn South Tipoff Tournament.

Junior Phoebe Byrnes, a transfer from SUNY Brockport, led the Cortland Women’s Basketball team 3-0 during the first period with an assist by sophomore Caysea Cohen.  With three seconds left on the clock during the first period, junior Lindsay Minor shot a one-pointer ending the period 34-20, Cortland.  Senior Megan Touhey brought the score to 36-20 during the first 30 seconds of the second period.  Conclusively, Touhey scored 22 points throughout the entire game as well as senior Grace Williamson.  Phoebe Byrnes added 14 points to the score and Caysea Cohen concluded 13 points as well as 14 rebounds, which happens to be a team-high.

Following, the Cortland Women’s Basketball Team faced Mary Washington University Saturday afternoon and fell to a 60-53 loss.  During the first half, the Red Dragons shot 38 percent from the floor and 27 percent in the second half.  Williamson scored 17 points, junior Erin Wolstenholme scored 12 points, Touhey finished up with six points, and Byrnes with six as well.

This weekend leaves the Cortland Women’s Basketball Team with a 1-1 record and much confidence for their home opener on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Elmira followed by another home game Thursday at 6 p.m. against SUNYIT.  Until then!

Mary Washington Tip-Off Tournament

While SUNY Cortland students begin their “Cortaca-Weekend” celebration early, the Cortland Women’s Basketball team is too busy getting hyped during the 9 hour bus ride to Fredericksburg, Virginia. This is the first time the Red Dragons will play in the Mary Washington Tip-Off Tournament, and also marks the start of the 2013-2014 season. On Friday, November 15th at 5:30 p.m., the Cortland Women’s Basketball team will take on Virginia Wesleyan College, followed by facing the University of Mary Washington for the championship game Saturday, November 16th at 3 p.m.

As a second season assistant, Mary Holland graduated from Nazareth College in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in psychology.  During her stay, she played on the Nazareth women’s basketball team as a freshman all the way up to her senior year, where she was named captain and played a career total of 84 games.  Prior to her college career, she graduated from Dryden High School in 2007.  She balanced basketball, soccer, and softball, and received the U.S. Marines Most-Distinguished Student-Athlete Award, the Sport and Spine Award, and two collegiate scholarships.

Torie Lee is the newest assistant coach for the Cortland Women’s Basketball team.  She enters her first season after graduating in May with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Le Moyne College.  At Le Moyne, Torie Lee played as a point and shooting guard from freshman all the way through to her senior year.  She was named captain for the 2011-2012 season her junior year as well as the 2012-2013 season her senior year.  Previously, Lee graduated from Fayetteville-Manlius High School in 2009 where she was a high competitor on the track and field team.  She holds a record of scoring more than 1,000 career points for the Fayetteville-Manlius High School basketball team and made the All-CNY first team selection.

One Family

I am saddened to share with you the news regarding #21, senior Sarah Shine, who has decided to discontinue her captaincy and resign from the SUNY Cortland Women’s Basketball Team.  At 5’11”, Shine has taken on the forward/guard position since the 2010-2011 season her freshman year after graduating from Mount Sinai High School.

As for the rest of the CWB team, these ladies are working their fingers to the bone in preparation for this weekend’s Mary Tip-Off Tournament.  The 2013-2014 roster is officially out and listed below:
