16 Successful Seasons

jeannetteLets get to know head coach Jeannette Mosher as we celebrate the beginning of her 16th season as head coach of the SUNY Cortland Women’s Basketball Team. Coach Mosher completed last season with a career record of 325 wins and 95 losses. Did you know that Jeannette Mosher is the leader of career wins at SUNY Cortland? She was titled the SUNYAC Coach of the Year six times as well as WBCA East Region Coach of the Year during the 2009-2010 season. Mosher is an active member of the Basketball Coaches Association of New York and was awarded the BCANY Coach of the Year in 2000, 2001, 2004, and 2007.  In 2011, Mosher was selected to the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame’s Silver Anniversary Team. Not only does Jeannette Mosher take the lead of career wins at SUNY Cortland, but she held the record for all-time leading scorer upon graduating St. Joseph’s College in Rensselaer, Indiana with 2,280 points in 1990. She has been inducted into the Great Lakes Valley Conference Hall of Fame after being named the GLVC Player of the Year and first team All-American her senior year.

Sixteen

Congratulations to the team of sixteen 2013-2014 CWB Red Dragons!

Friday afternoon was the first practice of the season for the ladies representing Cortland Women’s Basketball.  Out of 18 that tried out, only two cuts were made.  I would like to welcome the three freshmen and three transfers that are now a part of the family!  Listed are the ten RETURNING players for the 2013-2014 season:

  • CaptainSarah Shine, senior
  • CaptainMegan Touhey, senior
  • Grace Williamson, senior
  • Brooke DeMarco, junior
  • CaptainLindsey Minor, junior
  • Brittany Rando, junior
  • Sarah Seger, junior
  • Erin Wolstenholme, junior
  • Caysea Cohen, sophomore
  • Shannon White, sophomore

Followed by the first practice without the cuts, Saturday morning consisted of shooting and conditioning in the morning, and at 3:00 an inter-squad scrimmage took place where the team is split evenly, 7 versus 7, and a “red and white” type game is held.  These ladies are off to a great start and I am excited to see what pre-season has to offer.  Only three weeks remain until the first game of the season where the CWB team will take on Virginia Wesleyan College.

Tryouts: Day 1

Image

Day one of tryouts for the Cortland Women’s Basketball team is officially complete.  Head coach Jeannette Mosher and assistant coaches Torie Lee & Mary Holland, had the 18 determined ladies report to the track at 7:30 a.m. for a timed-mile run.  All partakers had to conclude the mile in under eight minutes: Guards had to finish in six minutes and 45 seconds while forwards needed to finish in seven minutes and 45 seconds.  Out of the 18 girls present at tryouts, 10 of them are returning players from last season not including junior Taisha Morris who will be red-shirting for the Red Dragons after suffering a knee injury last year.  In total, three players from the previous season have withdrawn from the CWB team leaving four or five shoes to be filled.

Seniors Sarah Shine, Megan Touhey, and Grace Williamson are thrilled to take on their final season.  The second half of day one’s tryouts began at 4:30 p.m. where practice and drilling took place.  This part of tryouts shows the true skills of all potential players such as shooting, ball handling, and running on the court.  Captains Lindsey Minor, Sarah Shine, and Megan Touhey see the 4:30 drilling as a way to get a feel for what each player’s ideal positions are, such as forwards, post players, rebounders, and shooting or ball handling guards.

Unfortunately, that is all I’ve got for today’s coffee break.  Fortunately, there is nothing but excitement to bring to the table by the end of the week, so I will keep you posted.  Figuratively and literally.

Anticipation

October 15th is quickly approaching.  Some would say “where does time go?”, but the Cortland Women’s Basketball team would say “let the games begin”.  Tomorrow begins tryouts for these expected SUNYAC champions.  At 7:30 a.m., the girls are to run a timed mile, followed by practice at 4:30 p.m.  According to captain Sarah Shine, there will probably be one round of cuts by Friday considering the smaller than usual amount of ladies trying out for the 2013-2014 season.  Tryouts will involve a lot of sprints, basic drills, and lots of scrimmaging.  With regards to last season, all but three players are returning considering the team was strictly underclassman.  This season, there will be three returning as seniors motivated to take the lead.

Followups will transpire throughout the week of tryouts.  Good luck to all returning players and future CWB stars!

The First Of Many To Come

Image

My name is Brittany Barry and I am a senior at SUNY Cortland, anticipating graduation in May with a degree in Sport Management.  A little over 3 years ago, while I was in the process of applying to SUNY Cortland, I was invited via mail to an open house dinner at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center in Florham Park, New Jersey.  The tours and dinner were run by Sport Management interns that study at Cortland.  My eyes lit up.  I felt a sense of belonging and such a strong need to be involved in the sport industry.  I hadn’t even visited the campus yet!

I applied and was accepted at SUNY Cortland to study psychology, but I felt as if my experience at the Atlantic Health Jets Training Center truly made me realize the area I want that diploma to shine on in four years: Sport Management.  For 12 years, I had been an elite gymnast, and even in-season, I would voluntarily manage my high school’s wrestling team.  I felt such an enjoyment out of it that I even volunteered to be the manager of the varsity team here at Cortland, too!  Team atmosphere shapes who I am even if I am not a “player” on the team.  I simply love the satisfaction I get from being a part of a team I am lucky enough to work with.

So here I am, creating my next project: a blog about the CWB (Cortland Women’s Basketball) team.  The captains for the 2013-2014 season are Lindsey Minor, Sarah Shine, and Megan Touhey.  I am so excited because it is currently preseason and tryouts begin October 15th.  There are 21 girls trying out and CWB are looking to take 5 or 6 dexterous fits for the upcoming season.  As for the rest of them, they are all returning players and expected to be SUNYAC champs.  So make sure you stick around for a delightful CWB coffee break with me once in awhile for updates on preseason as we get closer to a fresh start for these ladies.
